I expect at least a playable alpha or closed beta by the end of next year, and I believe pretty strongly that it will be sooner than that. SOE only has a few more things that they need to get done, from a technology point of view, and put into Landmark before it's full speed ahead on EQ:N's development. It just depends on how long those things take.
Things like flowing water, AI pathing over a destructible environment, and a few other little things.I doubt we'll see a launch ready version of EQ:N by the end of 2015, but if you look at the trends in the industry, new games are being put out and still called 'Beta' even while they're adding new events and gameplay scenarios like what an expansion would be for a normal game as well as monetizing them - look at Smite, PoE, and Warframe to name only a few.I doubt we'll see more than an open Beta with monetization before 2016 though. This was my assumption as well. When he said that, it sounded very similar to me to when he was talking about Landmark at SOE Live 2013, which is why I see it being a Beta, not a full release.Though as I pointed out, the lines between the two have become VERY blurred in recent years. Devs aren't dumb, they realize players don't give a crap about paying for a game that's in a Beta state as long as it's fun and entertaining, i.e.
As long as they're getting their money's worth. It also takes the pressure off of the Devs for a game, because they can also point to the words 'Beta' when people start bitching about stuff, and most people will simply accept that nowadays. It's a good time to be a game developer.:). You know, as hard as it may be to believe, landmark is EQN.Sure, there's no content. There's no story or npc's.
But as they develop things for landmark (movement, combat, pathing, mob's, caves, optimization, inventory, water.and god knows what else), they can check them off of EQN as well. What i'm getting at is trying to estimate/guess EQN's release date based on what they have told us progress wise (60%?), and relating it to other games in development.won't work. Its absolutely not the same. Its like comparing an electric engine to a combustion engine - in the end it may have the same result, but they get there a lot differently.Personally, i'm hoping to be surprised by their timetable. After all, they're basically letting us play pre-alpha EQ:N right now.
I think we can use the Race Workshop as a kind of guide to when EQN will be ready for a closed beta. All those races have to be designed and implemented, as well as a bunch of the NPC races. It takes about two months to do a workshop, and we've already got two under our belts. So it looks like it'll be about 14 more months minimum before we're ready to see EQN closed beta, maybe 16 to 18 months, depending on how much other-race building and world-building they have to do, and how much they can crib from Landmark players. Based on what has been shown at SOE live, along with the rate of movement with things like the polls as well as the twitch streams, I believe that you will see Landmark open beta at the 2015 SOE Live. Then I believe that the following year at SOE Live will be the alpha or closed beta for next. The rate at which classes and races have been shown kind of worries me.
I mean so far in landmark they have done building challenges for only two races, the dark elves and the kerran, with the process being that slow I wonder if it will be more likely a release for 2017. Yeah lets not forget the 'Star Wars Galaxies' debacle. Sony has a history of turning out un-polished product and basically ruining their chances of a big success. I feel honestly this time, they will take their time and do it right.
I don't mind waiting, if its solid and gives me some of the flavor I miss from the old days of EQ1 (yes I know it won't be much if at all like EQ1) I can wait as long as it takes. NOTE TO SONY: Greed has gotten you in trouble before, perhaps less greed and more dedication to product and customer and yall would be the WoW, and not the 'whoops'. My bet is summer 2015. Especially since Landmark is already a playable game LITERALLY all they need to start alpha is the map. So technically they could have already had us in Norrath but they probably don't want us to be scarred by the crappy beta experience like Landmark did for many as it used to be filled with players and now (outside of the Workshop) feels like a ghostland of it's former self. Not to say it won't regain that as soon as open beta hits but still.
They don't want bad press on EQN since it's their big investment.I'd guess as soon as they have caves V2 they will start on the EQN map as by then they will probably have figured out the massive caves situation. It's not really hopes up.it's just an educated guess.
In reality 2015 Summer is MORE than possible so it's always going to be an option for them. They are technically already able to have an EQN alpha but obviously they are waiting till after Landmark hits open beta.So if they want us in early for EQN (much like Landmark) than all they need is the map. Obviously they are going to do systems before hand but none of which are THAT resource intensive.
Mostly visual as combat is almost entirely visual outside of balancing and then the obvious aesthetics.
